We know the thing in Hrodulf's basement is Dwemer (we do literally see it) but Hackdirt is almost certainly not Dwemer, being in Cyrodiil. We know the -area- he eventuallly digs into is dwemer. We dont know whether or not that's connected to what he was hearing at all. For all we know, he could have litterally just been crazy, and dug in there ....
